We talked about the notion of failure and falling forward learning from our mistakes, but there is more to the story than simply making the plan.Â
Everyone likes certainty to some degree or another but if we end up planning so much and never action, what are we really doing? I fall into the trap of over planning more than I’d like to admit.Â
After failing so many times and having to reboot. Your mind might naturally drift into a protective state and not want to step away from your comfort zone. That's not necessarily a bad thing especially when you might realize how costly mistakes can be especially as you get older.Â
One of the best tools that I have found to help remedy this situation is the skill of adaptation and flexibility.Welcome the uncertainty, but still have a plan. If you have an ideal plan with room for error and move forward, you will acquire new skills.
Think of a bowling; even if you don't have A TON of skills you at least have the goal of not bowling a gutter. If you have no skills at all or any recording of what you do correctly or incorrectly, how do you know what to correct? You don't. Ready yourself, shoot your shot and adjust. Ready, Aim, Shoot. This process is what you often refer to as learning. Except in the real world, learning isn't squeezed into 16 weeks with a grade; sometimes is less than that with your job on the line and sometimes its years of exposure and you slowly get better. Timing and sequence doesn't really matter because you now have the tool and mindset of awareness and adjustment.
On the road to greatness, you will indubitably come across uncertainty and unknowns, but that's okay. With this ONE new tool you can begin tapping into new levels.
Until next time, keep on grinding!
